Social Bookmarking

Task 1:  What is a social bookmarking? {5 min}

Here is a good video to explain social bookmarking - using the DELICIOUS social bookmarking site.

Task 2:  Start social bookmarking using DIIGO {15 min}

  1. Go to http://diigo.com
    1. Create an account
    2. Install the DIIGO toolbar in your browser.  NOTE:  If the interface language of your browser (FireFox) or the toolbar is not in English, you can install another extension from https://addons.mozilla.org/sv-SE/firefox/addon/1333/ called "Quick Locale Switcher" which will let you switch languages.  In IE, you can go to the WRENCH button, and find the language settings under the second tab.
  2. Find a group that is about a topic that interests you.  Join that group.
    1. Share the group URL on TWITTER, (use #cte319)  and explain your interest in that group.
  3. Find two or three people that share your interest in your topic
    1. Become followers of these people.
    2. Check out their NETWORK, and visit their profile pages.  See if there are followers you would like to follow.
    3. Find a link in their libraries that you like-and add it to your personal library.  What tags should you use?

Task 3:  Join our CTE319 DIIGO group {15 min}

  1. Follow the other members of the group.
  2. Find a link you like and add it to your personal library.
  3. Send a message to another member of the group.
  4. Find a web page that you think is relevant to our CTE319 group.
    • Add a STICKY NOTE to the web page asking for ideas/comments about the page.
    • HIGHLIGHT a sentence/phrase that you would like to draw our attention to.  Share these annotations with our CTE319 group.
  5. Visit several of the links shared by your colleagues.  Respond to the request for ideas/comments in the STICKY NOTE.

Task 4:  Install DIIGO toolbar at home {5 min}

  1. Transfer your existing bookmarks from your computer to you DIIGO account.
  2. Install the DIIGO toolbar in your browser.
  3. Add your DIIGO 'badge' to the sidebar in your BLOG.

OPTIONAL:  Use DIIGO with students

  1. Read the FAQ about using DIIGO with students at http://help.diigo.com/teacher-account/faq
  2. If/when you are practice teaching, find out if your mentor teacher at school is interested in the concept of social bookmarking, set up an Eductor's account (see http://help.diigo.com/teacher-account/getting-started) - you will need to use their school email to set this up, but ask them if you can share the admin access to the DIIGO account.
  3. Then create a group with the students you are teaching, and use the group to share links and have discussion topics related to learning English.
