Teacher's Pet <10 MINUTES>

 

 

Task 1:  What kinds of activities would you incorporate in your classroom worksheets?

 

Look at this list of task-types/activities you might find in a worksheet.  How many of these do teachers commonly incorporate in their materials?

  • Is it necessary to include such 'interactivity' in your paper-based worksheets?
  • To what extent do such activities motivate students?

 

 

 

Task 2:  What is Teacher's Pet?

 

Teacher's Pet is a 'toolbar' that you can add to your wordprocessor (MicroSoft WORD or OpenOFFICE) that will automatically create any of the activities in the poll above.  All you need to do is highlight the text, and then click a button.

Using Teacher's Pet

 

Task 1:  In the LAB we will be using OPEN OFFICE.  

 

Go to http://www.teachers-pet.org/ and follow the instructions to download and install the Teacher's Pet extension in Open Office.

 

Task 2:  Create some paper-based activities that require learner participation.  

 

 

  • Look at some of these activities, and try to create a paper-based activity that address the "R" in ASSURE - requiring learner participation.

 

  1. weather_worksheets.pdf  (teachers's notes) - IDEA - use the reading text and create a verb tense and/or synonym gap fill.
  2. everybody_ho.pdf IDEA - create a matching pair exercise (two halves of the sentence) from the example sentences
  3. http://www.developingteachers.com/articles_tchtraining/smartspf_beril.htm - IDEA - Create a paragraph jumble of the introduction.
  4. Download this WORD document which has a reading from Pre-Intermediate level. IDEA - Gap all the pronouns.

 

Task 3:  Installing the toolbar at home on your computer

 

If you prefer to use MicroSoft WORD on your computer, you can install it by following the instructions below.

 

You will need to install the toolbar from the Teacher's Pet website at http://www.teachers-pet.org/ 

 

NOTE:  If you are in the computer lab, or you aren't the ADMINISTRATOR on your computer, download this template and open it in WORD2007/2010.  ENABLE the macros and you will see the ADD-IN appear in your MENU bar.  You can access Teacher's Pet in this way.

 

 

  

IMPORTANT

 

If you are using an earlier version of WORD (WORD 2003 or earlier) it is VERY IMPORTANT that you adjust the macro security settings BEFORE you attempt to download and install the TOOLBAR.

 


SETTING MACRO SECURITY in earlier versions of Word

 

  1. Open up a WORD document. 
  2. You need to ensure that your security settings are set to 'Medium'. 
  3. Look at the top of your WORD window and find the MAIN MENU bar:
    1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Options'.
    2. Select the 'Security' tab.
    3. Under 'Macro Security', click 'Macro Security'.
    4. Select the 'Security Level' tab, and then choose 'Medium'.

 


Note: With 'Medium' security, when you open a document which contains macros, you are asked whether to activate them. Only choose to do so if you trust the source!

 

 

 

A:  Installing in WORD 2007

 

Watch this video.  Pause the video and follow the steps to install the toolbar on your computer.

 

You will have to switch your view between several views - this browser window to watch the video, a second browser window (or TAB) open to http://www.teachers-pet.org/
to download the toolbar , and finally the WORD document that let's you install the toolbar.

 

At the end you will be asked to close your WORD program and restart it.  From this point on, every time you use WORD you will have access to the Teacher's Pet toolbar.

 


NOTE:  In earlier versions of WORD you may need to make the Teacher's Pet toolbar visible by going to the MAIN MENU - VIEW > TOOLBARS and make sure that Teacher's Pet is selected.  It will then appear in the toolbar beneath the MAIN MENU bar at the top right of the WORD window.

 

 

 

B:  Accessing the toolbar

 

The toolbar once installed will always be available any time you use your wordprocessor

  • You only have to install it once on your computer. 
  • If you have two computers, you will need to install it on both.

 

 

Watch this video to learn how to find the toolbar and run a macro to make a jumbled paragraph.

 

Open up this WORD document and try to follow the steps in the video.  You can pause the video between steps to work your way through the procedure.

  1. Open up your draft post in your blog for KWL
    • Consider some of the macros that Teacher's Pet allows you to easily create paper-based activities. 
    • Add to your draft KWL post what you have learned from the activity.
    • Focus of applying this in teaching English and practical ideas for creating materials for the classroom that require learner participation. 
      • Which activities do you think would be most useful?
      • Do you think other teachers would be interested in using Teacher's Pet?
      • Do you feel confident enough to train any of your colleagues to use Teachers' Pet?
  2. Publish your post and label it with 'KWL' and 'Teacher's Pet'.
    • When you get a chance, have a look at the posts in your colleagues' blogs.
